Dance Under the Stars

Saturday, October 5, 2002 at 8:00 PM
Beckman Mall
$15 Adults; $5 Youth

Two consecutive evenings of music and dance will take place outside on the Beckman Mall. A dance floor will be set up so that people will be able to dance as well as listen to the music.

A celebration of contemporary Paris, this retro-cabaret quintet celebrates the rich diversity of the city with blues, swing, Gypsy, flamenco, and North African music. Chanteuse Belle du Berry spins a jazzy and intriguing twist on the chanson tradition while trumpet player David Lewis traces the group's sound to the cabaret tradition that flourished in Paris before World War II.

The band is an eclectic line-up of global musicians with varied musical and artistic influences. The music of French gypsy guitar legend Django Reinhardt is an influence, but varied sources of inspiration can be found in jazz, Latin music, 1930s chanson, odd-meter rhythms from Eastern Europe, and more recent influences that merge to create a sound that is unique and contemporary.
