Russian folk dance and music trio Barynya was founded in 1991 by accordion player Mikhail Smirnov, dancer Sasha Anchutin, and folk singer Natalia Demidova. The first show took place at the Russian restaurant Fyodoroff in New York. In 2002 balalaika virtuoso Alex Siniavski has joined Barynya as musical director, and in 2003 Russian dancers Olga Chpitalnaia and Vitaly Verterich began performing wiith the group.
The name of the ensemble comes from the fast Russian traditional dance with which the original trio originally began all their programs.
