A pair of LAPD detectives, a murdered stripper, and a love trianglethe quintessential mid-century L.A. story. The twist in director Sam Fuller's largely unseen gem are its interracial relationships and Little Tokyo setting.
The films runs 82 minutes, and will be followed by a discussion featuring industry professionals and academics. Larry Mantle, host of 89.3 KPCC FM's daily Air Talk and weekly Film Week will moderate the panel, which will include:
- Lon Kurashige, Associate Professor of History, American Studies, and Ethnicity, University of Southern California
- Dr. Kurashige is author of the award-winning book Japanese American Celebration and Conflict: A History of Ethnic Identity and Conflict. He has also published essays in the Journal of American History and other scholarly outlets. Professor Kurashige has edited a reader on Asian American history and is now re-interpreting U.S. history for a new college-level textbook. His current book project, a history of the movement among white Americans to counter anti-Asian racism, is entitled "Rethinking the Yellow Peril."
- Henry Sheehan, Film Critic
- Henry Sheehan has been a professional film critic for more than thirty years, and has written for a variety of publications, including dailies (The Orange County Register, The Boston Globe), alternative weeklies (The Los Angeles Read, LA Weekly), monthlies (The Atlantic Monthly), and specialized film journals (Film Comment, Sight and Sound). He has also been a featured performer on KPCC's "Film Week.
- James Shigeta, actor
- James Shigeta first came on screen in the U.S. in 1959 as Detective Joe Kojaku in The Crimson Kimono. He was cast in two more feature films before being awarded a Golden Globe Award for the most promising male newcomer. His role in the 1961 theatrical version of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Flower Drum Song brought him notability in Hollywood. Over the next four decades he appeared in a variety of television shows and movies, including Perry Mason, Die Hard, and Disney's Mulan.
