"This is the City..." and this is the film that launched the phenomenon of the LAPD as Hollywood star. Jack Webb's supporting performance led to his creation of Dragnet. Richard Basehart stars.
The films runs 79 minutes, and will be followed by a discussion featuring industry professionals and academics. Larry Mantle, host of 89.3 KPCC FM's daily Air Talk and weekly Film Week will moderate the panel, which will include:
- Glynn Martin, Executive Director, LA Police Historical Society
- Glynn Martin, a retired LAPD watch commander, heads the Los Angeles Police Historical Society, which describes its mission as "to enhance public safety by building a bridge of understanding and support between our community and its police department. We bring people closer together through a unique combination of a police museum and interactive youth programs that instill an appreciation of the essential role of the police in a free society."
- Joe Domanick, author
- Joe Domanick, an award-winning investigative journalist and author, is the Senior Fellow for Criminal Justice of the Institute for Justice and Journalism at USC's Annenberg School for Communication. His latest book is Cruel Justice: Three Strikes and the Politics of Crime in America's Golden State. His previous book, To Protect and Serve: The LAPD's Century of War in the City of Dreams, won the 1995 Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Non-Fiction Book.
- Henry Sheehan, Film Critic
- Henry Sheehan has been a professional film critic for more than thirty years, and has written for a variety of publications, including dailies (The Orange County Register, The Boston Globe), alternative weeklies (The Los Angeles Read, LA Weekly), monthlies (The Atlantic Monthly), and specialized film journals (Film Comment, Sight and Sound). He has also been a featured performer on KPCC's "Film Week.
