The Cultural Expedition Program

The Cultural Expedition Program is a collaborative program between Caltech and the Pasadena Unified School District. Initiated in 1998, the program included over 600 participants last year. This season more than 600 high school students will participate in curriculum activities on their respective campuses and in residency activities with artists. The curriculum focuses on four performing arts engagements at Caltech during the 2010-2011 season:

Jigu! Thunder Drums of China
Friday, October 15, 2010

Step Afrika!
Friday, March 11, 2011

Nrithyagram Dance Ensemble
Saturday, April 2, 2011

Aquila Theatre Company
A Midsummer Night's Dream

Friday, April 8, 2011

The goals of the program are to:

  • increase audience participation among underrepresented groups who reside within the greater Pasadena area, developing future audiences at Caltech;
  • explore different cultural traditions, discovering similarities and differences among each, creating cultural bridges of appreciation;
  • promote literacy through literary-based innovative learning opportunities;
  • acquaint local high-school students with Caltech through on-campus activities and demystify what occurs on a college campus, specifically Caltech.

Jr. Watson Program

Interested and talented science high school students, identified by their teachers, are invited to participate in a private lab tour with selected lecturers from the Earnest C. Watson Lecture Series. Following the lab and campus tours, students are treated to dinner with a member of the lab group, then attend the Watson Lecture in Beckman Auditorium.
Teachers with students interested in participating in this program, please call Cara Stemen at (626) 395-3841.
