The Siemens Competition a signature program of the Siemens Foundation, the national leader in supporting Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education with contributions surpassing $7 million each year is the nation's premier science research competition for high school students. The annual competition, administered by the College Board, awards college scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $100,000 in individual and team categories.
In another record-setting year, 2008 saw 1,893 students registered to enter the Siemens Competition this year with a total of 1,205 projects submitted. This represents an increase of more than 10% in team and individual project submissions and an increase of more than 16% in the number of registrations. Again surpassing last year's totals, 311 students from 33 states were named Semifinalists, with 96 students being honored as Regional Finalists. These students are called to compete at one of six Regional Competitions held over three consecutive weekends in November. A complete list of semifinalists and regional finalists is available at www.siemensfoundation.org.
Regional Finalists will go head-to-head presenting their research with peers across the nation. Regional Finals commence November 7, 2008. The events are hosted by six of America's leading research universities: Massachusetts Institute of Technology (November 7-8); University of Notre Dame (November 7-8); University of Texas at Austin (November 14-15); Carnegie Mellon University (November 14-15); California Institute of Technology (November 21-22); and Georgia Institute of Technology (November 21-22).
Winners of the regional events are invited to compete at the National Finals at New York University in New York City, December 5-8, 2008. Visit www.siemensfoundation.org on December 8, 2008 at 9:30 am EST to view a live webcast of the National Finalist Award Presentation.
