Welcome back to Beckman Auditorium!
The GRAMMY® Award-winning vocal ensemble Chanticleer marks the return of CaltechLive! in person events at Beckman Auditorium on Friday, May 13 at 7:30 p.m. PT.
Chanticleer has been hailed as “the world’s reigning male chorus” by The New Yorker, and is known around the world as “an orchestra of voices” for its wide-ranging repertoire and dazzling virtuosity. Our own L.A. Times acclaims “Chanticleer fascinates and enthralls for much the same reason a fine chocolate or a Rolls Royce does: through luxurious perfection.”

Awakenings October 2021 program note: "The sun peeks through, painting soft lines on the wall. The smell of coffee seeps under the door. It's time to wake up. After the longest performance break in Chanticleer's history, we are thrilled to sing together again. Finally disentangled from our isolation, we return with a renewed sense of community and purpose. It's time to come together. It's time to celebrate. It's time to sing! Repertoire includes music by William Byrd, Claudio Monteverdi, and Augusta Read Thomas, as well as new commissions by Steven Sametz and Ayanna Woods."
At the height of the pandemic, Chanticleer commissioned composer Ayanna Woods to write them a piece that touches on some of the shared experiences of the past year. The text for their song close[r], now is an erasure poem created by Woods. The source material is an LA Times editorial by Theatre Critic Charles McNulty from March 2020 detailing the reasons why theaters and the performing arts should "close, now." Woods restructured and resampled the article to create a new text full of questioning and yearning. READ: Charles McNulty, LA Times Theatre Critic, March 11, 2020 commentary
