Add to Cal

Caltech proudly presents Cosmic Coda (Astrophysics for Dairy Cows), a film by MJ Doherty about the teamwork required to develop LIGO over 40 years (minus a 30-year hole in the middle.) This monumental NSF-funded project was developed on both the Caltech and MIT campuses.

The film, featuring a haunting score by Room Full of Teeth, will be screened for free in Beckman Auditorium on Monday, November 9, 2026, at 7:30 PM with a panel and Q & A following featuring Prof. Kip Thorne, Prof. Rana Adhikari and the director MJ Doherty.

Though Prof. Thorne, whose work on LIGO dates to 1968, is not in the film, he was the theorist for the project; an equal partner in the conceptualization and design of LIGO.

Professor Thorne will help us get a contextualized understanding of the processes that led to him and his two colleagues receiving their Nobel Prizes.
