Thomas F. Rosenbaum, the ninth president of Caltech, will retire on June 30, 2026, after 12 years in the position. He will remain at the Institute as a member of the faculty.

Rosenbaum’s steady leadership and dedication to Caltech’s core mission and values have also guided the Institute through a global pandemic and a devastating natural disaster in a manner that underscores his commitment to cultivating a thriving, supportive, and inclusive community of scholars that is a destination of choice for the brightest in science, engineering, and technology.

As we approach the end of our academic school year, we’d like to take this time to thank him for his advancements, contributions, and leadership.

Luke Lamitina walked on to the Caltech track team as a junior and quickly set the school’s record for javelin throw in his first year of competition. In his second season, Lamitina qualified for the NCAA national championship and became an All-American athlete.

As an undergraduate at Caltech, Lamitina works in optics labs, exoplanet research labs, and more. He spent two summers on research fellowships at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which is administered by Caltech and often features collaborative research with Caltech faculty and students. “It’s been great, and definitely something you wouldn’t get to experience anywhere else,” he says.

Lamitina will start a PhD program at Stanford in the fall.
