Caltech researchers and engineers on campus and at JPL, which Caltech manages for NASA, pursue science-driven solutions to mitigate climate change. In Conversations on Sustainability, you will hear directly from Caltech experts about their progress and can ask your own questions.

In the second conversation in this series, Engineering and Applied Science division chair Harry Atwater speaks with science writer Robert Perkins about the future of solar power and promising efforts to capture carbon dioxide (CO2) and convert it into useful products, such as liquid solar fuels.

About the Participants

Harry Atwater is Howard Hughes Professor of Applied Physics and Materials Science, and the Otis Booth Leadership Chair in the Division of Engineering and Applied Science. Lead of the Resnick Sustainability Institute's Sunlight-to-Everything initiative, he is a pioneer in photovoltaics, materials that convert light into electricity, and has advanced the design of high-efficiency solar cells. Atwater is a principal investigator of the Caltech Space Solar Power Project, and he directs the Liquid Sunlight Alliance (LiSA), a Department of Energy hub that is working to generate liquid fuels from sunlight, water, CO2, and nitrogen.Robert Perkins is a Content and Media Strategist and Emergency Communications Coordinator in Caltech's Office of Strategic Communications. He graduated from the University of Kansas and the University of Southern California, and has worked as a news reporter and public relations specialist. Currently, he covers research in the fields of engineering, geology, and planetary science while also working on Caltech's COVID-19 communications efforts.
