Visual Culture Event: Campus Walking Tour

On the Corners and In the Bushes: Three Historians Excavate Campus

Join three scholars of Los Angeles history, Wendy Cheng, Becky Nicolaides, and Yvette Saavedra, on a historical walk across campus. This tour brings light to overlooked stories in our landscape by giving historical depth to the street names, plants and socio-racial boundaries that structure our experiences on and off campus. The tour begins at the intersection of Wilson Ave. and San Pasqual St., processes to Dabney Garden and concludes on the corner of Hill St. and California Blvd. This will be a unique opportunity for students to hear and speak with experts on the history of colonization, suburbanization, and racial politics in the San Gabriel Valley.

The Caltech-Huntington Program in Visual Culture, which is funded by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and based in the Division of the Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), features new undergraduate course offerings, guest lecturers, and other programming to foster conversations between humanists and scientists. Its activities are organized by HSS and other Caltech faculty in collaboration with scholars at The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens.
